Course Description

This course provides in depth instruction on EX2100e Digital Excitation System operation, maintenance and troubleshooting.

Training is divided between classroom theory and practical lab exercises. The student will learn the theory and operation of the EX2100e through classroom presentations and discussions. The lab exercises are designed to reinforce EX2100e operation, troubleshooting and maintenance functions.

Target Audience

This course is oriented for participants who have previously attended an EX2100e class and wish to learn more about the EX2100e system and the GE ToolboxST™ application program.

Prerequisites

Participants must have:

  • Instruction is given in English, therefore a reasonable ability to read and understand spoken English is required
  • Attend the EX2100e Generator Maintenance course 
  • Participants should be very familiar with a Microsoft® Windows®
    operating system.
  • Participants are encouraged to research their turbine-generator equipment and documentation to verify they have an EX2100e on their unit and to bring a copy of  their system elementary drawing with them to class.

Learning Objectives

This course will provide knowledge on the following:

  • Upload/Download configuration file
  • View and change parameters
  • Perform commissioning test using the simulation
  • Configure the trend recorder and capture buffer
  • Follow signal flow via the diagrams
  • Configure the Communication network
  • View faults and alarms
  • Be able to state the major function of each circuit board
  • Follow the signal flow on the excitation elementary drawings
  • Know how to replace and configure the processor cards online

Course Content

LESSON 1 - EX2100e Operation Review

  1. Review EX2100e fundamentals and modes of operation.
  2. Review offline and online operation.
  3. Review EX2100e regulator hardware.
  4. Review EX2100e static hardware.
  5. Briefly explain EX2100e static start mode.

LESSON 2 - EX2100e LOTO & Drawings Reading 

  1. Identify isolation points on EX2100e panel and power plant auxiliary systems to work safely during excitation maintenance and troubleshooting.
  2. Briefly explain key points while reading GE EX2100e electrical drawings.

LESSON 3 – EX2100e Software, Protection, & Troubleshooting

  1. Briefly explain control software functions and block diagram operation.
  2. Define EX2100e protective functions (UEL, OEL, V/Hz, LOE).
  3. Identify EX2100e hardware modules for detection and protection.
  4. Briefly explain EX2100e protection and limiters operation depending on unit status (offline or online).
  5. Define PSS operation.
  6. Configure Live Trends.
  7. Identify troubleshooting guides for EX2100e regulator and static.

LESSON 4 – EX2100e Commissioning & Maintenance Manuals 

  1. Identify, differentiate, and understand the different types of instruction manuals for commissioning and maintenance.

LESSON 5 – EX2100e TILs

     A. Identify EX2100e TILs (Technical Information Letter).

     B. Briefly explain how to read a TIL.

     C. Review and discuss TILs.
