Course Description                   

This course is designed to enhance GE E-Class (7EA and 9E) gas turbinegenerator operator knowledge and skills. The course provides a detailed overview of gas turbine operating sequences and control and protection functions. The course builds on prior knowledge and experience of the participants. They will learn to properly analyze operating problems of their gas turbine and take the necessary corrective action. Participants gain competence to interpret fault annunciations and how to determine if the annunciated fault can be remedied by operator action or by the assistance of instrumentation and/or maintenance personnel.This course will focus on the gas turbine and generator control and protection, the operational relationships of the compressor, combustion and turbine sections and generator systems. Discussion on turbine auxiliary systems is limited to key operational interfaces Participants may wish to bring their unit specific HMI control screens, alarm lists, control specification and device summary with them to facilitate correlating classroom discussions with specific unit parameters.Participants are also encouraged to bring information concerning issues their gas turbine may currently have or have experienced in the past, for discussion.

General Prerequisites               

Participants should have:

  1. Prior Gas Turbine experience as control room or outside operator, I&C or Mechanical Technician
  2. Have attended a GE Gas Turbine Operation course, or possesses equivalent knowledge
  3. Technical background (Mechanical or Controls)
  4. Reasonable computer skills

NOTE: Participants will have difficulty to follow this course content if they do not fulfill the prerequisites listed above

Learning Objectives                  

This course will provide basic knowledge on the following:

  1. Familiarize with gas turbine operating sequences and modes: Start, Loading and Shutdown
  2. Understand control and protection functions for the turbine, and auxiliary systems
  3. How to interpret and understand HMI screen graphics, information and commands
  4. Respond to an alarm from the HMI screen and how to locate/trace signals to the control logic
  5. Be able to utilize alarm causes response database in respect to the equipment and systems
  6. Maintain availability, optimum performance and reliability by quickly addressing operational issues, alarms and recovering from a trip or Not Ready to Start condition
  7. Be able to assess the effects of abnormal operating conditions on the turbine and generator components
  8. Navigate through GE Documentation such as the O&M manual, P&IDs and Device Summary
  9. Identify nominal and alarm settings from device summary and control specifications
  10. Learn the impact of operations on the turbine maintenance inspection intervals
