Course Description

This module provides learners with an understanding of the operation of a generator and the various types of power generated at power plants, various generator curves, regulators & limiters, typical start-up & shut-down operations of a generator and the various parameters required for the safe synchronization of a generator.

Prerequisites

Participants should have:

  • Course material is in English; therefore, a reasonable ability to read and understand English is required.

Learning Objectives

This course will provide basic knowledge on the following:

  • Review how a generator works
  • Describe the differences between apparent power, real power, and reactive power
  • Read and Interpret the generator design curves, reactive capability curve, VEE curve, and synchronous impedance curve
  • Describe the functions of the AC and DC regulators on the excitation system
  • Describe the functions of OEL, UEL, and V/Hz limiter
  • Describe different excitation systems
  • Explain the difference between the two operating modes, synchronous (droop) and isochronous
  • Identify the four basic conditions that must be met before a generator can be synchronized safely
  • Describe the steps to take a generator online and then take it back offline
